3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 First article. When specified in the contract (see 6.2) the contractor shall furnish first
article units for inspection (see 4.2).
3.2 Materials. The contractor shall select the materials, but the materials used shall be
fully capable of meeting all of the operational and environmental requirements specified herein.
The materials specified in the applicable drawings are recommended, but are not mandatory.
Selection criteria of the class, grade or type part shall be that the material will be able to perform
its intended function when it is assembled. Verification of the supplier meeting the overall
performance requirements shall be the governing acceptance standard. Recovered materials shall
be used to the maximum extent possible.
3.3 Description. The Optical Imager SU-97/UA, SU-97A/UA, and SU-97B/UA, referred
to herein as the imager, consists of thermally compensated optical elements which focus the IR
energy from a mechanical scanner onto the detector array of an infrared system. The three
models differ in their internal configuration but are identical in performance and external
configuration. In system usage, they are, and must be, completely interchangeable.
3.3.1 Design. The imager shall meet the form, fit, function and interface requirements of
this specification.
3.3.2 Weight. The weight of the imager shall be 318 grams or under as weighed by a scale
with an accuracy of 1% or better.
3.3.3 Dimensions. The imager shall meet the dimensions and dimensional tolerances of
drawings SM-D-806993, SM-D-772258 or SM-D-969555 to ensure proper physical mating and
operation of the items built under this specification with the existing hardware.
3.4 Components. The number of components comprising the imager shall be held to a
minimum consistent with meeting the performance requirements. In this regard, drawings are to
be considered as a non-binding guide only.
