MIL-PRF-49169B(CR)
4.7. Operational life (reliability).
4.7.1. First article operational life (reliability). First article reliability testing shall be conducted as
part of the first article test and inspection schedule. First article samples shall not be considered
as part of the overall procurement quantities. The first article reliability test plan shall be in
accordance with a contractor-prepared, Government approved test plan.
4.7.1.1. Test item. Type I units only.
4.7.1.2. Test level.
Temperature +50° C (+5 -0° C)
Temperature cycling: none
Vibration: 2.2g ±10% peak acceleration value at any non-resonant frequency
between 20 and 60 Hz measured at the mounting points of the equipment. The duration of
vibration shall be at least 10 minutes during each hour of equipment operating time. The vibration
shall be normal to the plane of the LED.
Equipment ON-OFF cycling: Turn OFF 10 to 15 minutes during 3 hour cycle.
Duration: 500 hours on each sample.
4.7.1.3. Failure Criteria. A failure is defined as any malfunction which causes or may cause
inability to commence operation, cessation of operation or degradation below performance limits
specified for the equipment. Ambient temperature tests 4.5.1, 4.5.2, and 4.5.4 shall be performed
at least once prior to and after the test. Failure of any sample unit to meet the requirements of
3.6.1, 3.6.2, or 3.6.4 shall constitute failure of this test. Radiated power output requirement of
3.6.1 may be degraded by 20% maximum.
4.8. Visual and mechanical. A major defect is a defect, other than critical, that is likely to result
in failure or to reduce materially the usability of the unit of product for its intended purpose. A
minor defect is a defect that is not likely to reduce materially the usability of the unit of product
for its intended purpose, or is a departure from established standards having little bearing on the
effective use or operation of the unit. Visual and mechanical defects pertain to soldering,
soldering defects peculiar to printed wiring assemblies, solderless connectors, cabling and wiring,
fasteners, hardware and assembly, foreign objects, short circuit, finish, marking, parts, contacts,
tools, transistors and rectifiers, batteries and solderless electrical terminals.
4.9 Weight. Failure to meet the requirement of 3.2.1 shall constitute failure of this test.
