3.11
Treatment and painting. Unless otherwise specified, the aiming
light shall have an external surface of a composition or surface treatment
which will prevent rust, corrosion, and fungus growth in the full range of
environmental requirements. External color and surface shine shall reduce
light reflection and reduce recognition. Adherence of surface treatments or
coatings must be assured through the full range of environmental and use
factors.
3.12 Marking.
The IAL shall have markings to indicate battery
orientation.
3.13 Workmanship. All electronic parts and components of the aiming
light shall be free of smudges, excess solder, metal chips or the existence
of any foreign material on any surface. Bearing assemblies shall be free
from rust and tool marks. Wires and integrated circuitry shall be protected
from contact with rough or irregular surfaces and be shielded from shorting.
MIL-HDBK-454 may be used as guidance.
3.14 Environmental Stress Screening (ESS). The IAL and its
subassemblies shall not be damaged (see 3.15.1) when subjected to the ESS
exposures deemed necessary to reveal or display infant mortality type failures
(see 3.15.4) or ESS failures (see 3.15.5).
3.15 Technical Interpretation. The following technical interpretations
are, when referenced in section 3, 4, or 5, mandatory for this specification.
3.15.1 Damage. Damage is defined as any breakage, loosening,
distortion, or shifting; failure of any finish, hardware, connection, or
component; condensation on any internal surface; and failure to operate in
accordance with the requirements of this specification.
Room temperature is defined as +23oC + 10 Co.
3.15.2
Room temperature.
3.15.3 Spectral bandwidth. Spectral bandwidth is defined as the
difference between the upper and lower wavelength values measured at 50
percent of peak spectral intensity.
3.15.4 Infant mortality. Those failures which occur due to workmanship,
weak parts, and/or inadequate design.
